Every November, we come together as a nation to remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. At the Built Environment Campus in Bury St Edmunds, we hold a Remembrance Day ceremony to pay our respects and reflect on the courage and selflessness of those who served. This year’s event, held on Wednesday, 6th November, was one of the most impactful yet, drawing a record attendance of nearly 300 students, staff, and local community members. The annual ceremony, organised by Brian Tumbridge, has become a cherished tradition at our campus, growing in scale and significance each year.

A Moving Ceremony That Brought Generations Together

The morning began with a welcome address, setting a respectful and reflective tone for the event. Representatives from Stanton School joined us, bringing their own unique perspectives and helping to bridge the generational gap in remembrance. Their contributions were a powerful reminder that remembrance is not just a historical exercise, but a commitment passed from one generation to the next.

This year, the ceremony included the dedication of our campus memorial and a rededication of a special bench, serving as physical symbols of remembrance on our grounds. Students from West Suffolk College’s Public Service course also delivered a selection of readings and poetry, bringing emotion and depth to the proceedings. Their words captured the essence of Remembrance Day, honouring those who served and acknowledging the sacrifices they made.

A Moment of Silence and Reflection

At 11:00 am, the poppy cannon marked the beginning of the two-minute silence. This powerful moment of stillness allowed all present to reflect on the immense bravery and sacrifice of those who fought in wars past and present. It was a collective moment of gratitude, a pause in our busy lives to honour those who gave up their tomorrows for our today.

The silence was followed by the Last Post and Reveille, played by the BB Band. As the solemn notes filled the air, they brought an overwhelming sense of unity and reverence, reminding us of the sacrifices that have shaped our nation. We concluded with the Kohima Epitaph, its words as poignant and relevant today as they have ever been:

“When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today.”

The Power of Community and Support

An event of this scale would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. We are deeply grateful to Morgan Sindall, Anglian, ELC Construction Supplies, and Brewers Decorator Centres for their generous contributions. Their support has enabled us to create a meaningful and fitting tribute, ensuring that Remembrance Day remains a significant and respected tradition on our campus.

Brian Tumbridge, who organises the event each year, has dedicated countless hours to ensuring its success, and his efforts have transformed it into a powerful community gathering. Each year, he helps us honour the past while inspiring future generations to remember and respect those who served.

Lest We Forget

Remembrance Day is a time to pause and reflect, to honour the bravery of those who came before us, and to ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten. As the Built Environment Campus continues this annual tradition, we hope that our Remembrance Day ceremony remains a powerful reminder of the importance of peace, unity, and gratitude.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to this year’s event. Together, we keep the spirit of remembrance alive.

Lest we forget.
